Swimming Provision at Moat
The National Curriculum states:
“All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.
In particular, pupils should be taught to:
– swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
– use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and
breaststroke]
– perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.”
Here at Moat Primary Academy we believe that every child deserves and requires the skill of swimming and this provision is provided across Year 3 and Year 4. The aim is to meet the curriculum standards by the end of this time period so that children are confident in the water and can enjoy themselves safely in these situations.
Our swimming provision is currently provided by Swimwell and this takes place at Ribston Hall School, Gloucester. They provide excellent provision for our children and the instructors cater their lessons to each class and children individually and will support in the pool where required.
Starting in the 2017 to 2018 academic year, there is a new condition requiring schools to publish how many pupils within their year 6 cohort are meeting the national curriculum requirement to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations. This has been met by 12 out of our 22 children in the year 6 class (Summer 2019).
